How to Save on the Costs of Prescription Medication

Well, about a month ago, I had an appointment with my dermatologist and was given a prescription for Hydroquinone 4% for an area of skin that I found very unappealing and wanted to be rid of. Sad to say, my insurance did not cover this Prescription Medication and the out-of-pocket costs was $120 at the local Walmart pharmacy. The price was way more than I could afford so I just decided against getting the Prescription Medication and just left.

I got home later that evening and decided to do some online research using “Hydroquinone 4” as my search keywords, along with other terms such as “cheap”, “discount”, and any other keywords or phrases that I thought could help me find a better bargain for my Prescription Medication costs. I even visited Canada Drugs and several other discount online pharmacies and the best price I could find was roughly $88 for my order, which was still too much for me.

After several hours of searching, I finally gave up and just decided to forget about the Prescription Medication and not get it filled at all. As time passed, each time I saw the marred patch of skin, the angrier I got that I could not afford to pay for the actual treatment. It wasn’t life-threatening or anything, but it took a very huge toll on my self-esteem and gave me a negative outlook on the way people saw me, so last night I began to search again using different keywords using some of the techniques that I wrote about in this blog post on Google Search Engine tips and tricks where I provide an easy-to-follow tutorial on how to get the most out of your Google searches.

I then came across a web page titled GoodRx that I had not seen nor heard of before, so I took a chance and clicked on the link. The landing page asked for the name of the Prescription Medication as well as the zip code and then, after a short query was performed, provided me with several alternatives for purchasing the medicine—along with their prices—using an online coupon. There was no obligation and no fee to use this couple, and I didn’t even have to sign up for anything. Well, the first thing I thought was that this was either some scam or a fake site that would somehow try to dupe me out of my money, so I half-dismissed this as an option.

The results page was a list of local drugstores including Walmart, Target, CVS, Sam’s Club, etc. all with the price of the Prescription Medication that you would pay when using their coupon. The top results ranked anywhere from $20 to $23 and change. This was too good to be true, I thought, but saved the coupon to my desktop anyways and then shut off my computer… I really wasn’t sure what to believe.

This morning when I got up, I waited for the pharmacy at Target to open and I gave them a call. When the person on the other line returned to my call (she had to put me on hold to help people on the other two phone lines, first) I explained to her the website I was on and the coupon it offered along with the ridiculously low price that it claimed to offer. She told me that they do accept that coupon but she could not tell me the actual price I would end up paying until she had all of the information in front of her and ran it through the computers. I explained to her that I did not have a printer and asked what she needed from me to use this coupon. She said that all she needed was the Member ID, RxGroup, RxBin, and the RxPCN numbers (that were clearly printed on the coupon), so I gathered the required information and headed for the pharmacy.

After I got to the store, I handed in my prescription to the clerk and provided all of the information that she asked for. After a few minutes of data inquiry and such, she came back with a price which was EXACTLY what was on the GoodRx website! I was in total shock! This free and simple coupon saved me $100 and I didn’t have to do a single thing for it?!?!? So, as soon as I got home, I wrote this blog to tell all of you about this new-found gem of a website!

If you go to their site, you will see for yourself that it does work. There are no fees and no obligations at all. They even have an app that you can download to your phone! If you know someone who is paying high prices for prescription meds, please direct them to this website. It could save them a fortune!
